📢Last week, @Europarl_EN adopted a landmark position on #CSDDD. As partners within #STITCH @ethicaltrade @CNV_Internat @FNVMondiaal @fairwear_org @Cividep & CDI VN, we see how this ambitious position would positively impact garment workers🌍 A thread🧵 👇tinyurl.com/STITCHonEUCSDDD
✅ Alignment with the @OECD guidelines & @UN guiding principles for #responsiblebusiness conduct in promoting a risk-based approach asks companies to focus #duediligence efforts on the most salient risks in their #valuechains
✅ The comprehensive definition for access to #remedy includes #TU representation of workers, #stakeholderengagement and #grievancemechanisms rather than mere complaints procedures
✅'Adverse human rights impacts' is defined as in the UNGPs and the position has specific provisions for #stakeholders likely to be the most vulnerable to impacts in a company's value chain, such as #women and migrant workers
❗Based on our joint experience in creating better labour conditions in the highly fragmented #garmentindustry 👕 we know that this directive can be even more effective; here's a snapshot of our recommendations for the #trialogue starting today @EU_Commission @EUCouncil 🔊
💡 The scope would now oblige companies with 250+ employees & 40M+ turnover to prevent adverse #humanrights effects and remediate harm in their #valuechains through #collaboration; yet, to build the necessary leverage in the garment industry the scope needs to be even broader.
💡 While the @Europarl_EN position acknowledges the impact of buying companies’ trading and business practices on working conditions, #purchasingpractices are at the root of many #humanrights violations, hence merit a more explicit inclusion in core articles.
@fairwear_org @Europarl_EN A very clear directive to improve the purchasing practices of the brands would go a long way in improving conditions of workers.
