Last year, we and @DebtWe called for big changes to Debt Relief Orders: the abolition of the £90 fee and debt limit; an increase to the allowable monthly surplus income, and for the max car asset value to be raised to £5,000. Pleased that @hmtreasury has moved towards these today

Data from Pay UK and Vocalink show the total Direct Debit failure rate in November 2023 increased by 16% when compared with November 2022. This was driven by increases of 30% in both the “electricity and gas” and “mortgages” spending categories 💳

Although great news, there's less funding for free face to face debt advice these days! I wonder who the government thought were going to do the extra work without funding? I'm just waiting for fee charging Debt Management companies jumping in!
Running the numbers on the abolition of the £90 fee for Debt Relief Orders. Budget papers say the cost is £5 million per year = 55,555 DROs. That's a 75% increase on the number of DROs in 2023. How will the extra demand be met by Approved Intermediaries (i.e., debt advisers)?
Since much/most of the increase in DROs would formerly have been bankruptcies, this represents a massive shift of work from the state to the third sector. Cost savings to government will be significant on top of this £5m figure. At least some of the £ should follow the work.

Last year, we and @DebtWe called for big changes to Debt Relief Orders: the abolition of the £90 fee and debt limit; an increase to the allowable monthly surplus income, and for the max car asset value to be raised to £5,000. Pleased that @hmtreasury has moved towards these today

Estimates of illegal lending vary widely. Analysing the FCA's Financial Lives Survey, 2020 we find that borrowers from legal, high cost lenders are at greatest risk and smaller scale survey results need to be treated with great caution. Read the report: bit.ly/3sWcDDy
