"Entrepreneurs should build products where responsible data is a differentiator and enabler for core business growth." Keynote @ Responsible Data Summit @dawnsongtweets @dataeconomyai @OasisLabs
@jiahengzhang96 @dataeconomyai They want both. 😏
@jiahengzhang96 @dataeconomyai Federated learning is an interdisciplinary area. One needs to know machine learning, secure computation and encryption, distributed systems, game theory and market mechanism design, etc. But one needs not be top expert in all these, just one of them.
@jiahengzhang96 @dataeconomyai Robots can do many things to augment our ability. One area is where there’s danger for human to engage in, such as managing Fukushima nuclear leaks. Another area is to help us do labor intensive and repetitive works like old age caring. Or drug design, augmenting our brain.
@jiahengzhang96 @dataeconomyai Good question. Hardware solutions are indeed a way to ensure confidentiality and security, but they are not as versatile as software solutions. In many applications, we wish to trade security and efficiency as well as adaptability, and some times use current hardware solutions
As an example, you can point to the IAPP Privacy Risk Study referenced in my talk that 90+% of public companies in that study acknowledged that personal data breach and mishandling cause significant harm to reputation and brand.

Data inventory. One has to know where the data is located and what the data is in order to build a robust data lifecycle management program.

Data inventory is the foundation of data deletion. But data deletion requires quite a few capabilities (such as user requested account deletion, retention policy based deletion, etc.) that a data inventory platform typically doesn’t have.

@UsmannKhan5 @dataeconomyai Most breaches can occur due to not getting the basics of information security right. My guess is that an organization that is mindful enough to use a secure enclave properly is going well beyond the basics, and may be less likely to get breached.
@UsmannKhan5 @dataeconomyai We need to double down on making sure data is encrypted at the application layer and/or on disk. The largest root cause of data breaches have occurred due to unencrypted data on physically lost media or portable devices. Those two summed up exceed phishing/hacking/malware.
Follow the exciting panel discussion about Responsible Data Policy with @heatherwest, @EFFFalcon, Vivek Narayanadas, @hax0rlaw, and @richardswhitt. Panel is moderated by @alexfeerst from @neuralink and Responsible Data Foundation! youtu.be/EmtXmkFPBPI #ResponsibleData

@littleRound_cn @dataeconomyai Add much more uncertainty that can only be resolved through communication to their models
"Entrepreneurs should build products where responsible data is a differentiator and enabler for core business growth." Keynote @ Responsible Data Summit @dawnsongtweets @dataeconomyai @OasisLabs
@tremblerz @dataeconomyai @random_walker We have a different project that shows where your smart home devices send their data: iotinspector.org
If you're interested in learning more about digital stewardship, check out this talk from the @dataeconomyai #responsibledata summit from Oasis's very own @richardswhitt youtu.be/vNZxwxYLJGc
@lvdmaaten @dataeconomyai Thanks! I would recommend using a faster homomorphic encryption scheme, such as the ones we implemented in the Microsoft SEAL library, to generate the triples:)
@littleRound_cn @dataeconomyai of a variety of sizes
@littleRound_cn @dataeconomyai Absolutely. It is not a question of no scale v. total scale, but whether it makes sense to have so much activity concentrated in so few places. The hyper economies of scale make little sense, but power generation and data collation in ordinary life happen in organizations
Want to learn more about OpenDP? Join #ResponsilbeData at 1 PM (EDT). Ask any questions here: #AskResponsible_Vadhan and Salil will respond live during the event.
But yes, they are not the only choices, and indeed technologies such as secure multiparty computation (possibly assisted by enclaves) have the potential of being combined with DP to provide the best of both.
applications: anytime we want to make statistical analysis of sensitive data available, eg public health (including COVID-19), study of behavior on social media, economic research, government open-data mandates, medicine, analysis of customer data within or between companies...
another one related to what Simson Garfinkel is currently discussing: (3) helping data users understand and account for the additional statistical uncertainty coming from the introduction of noise for privacy
@dataeconomyai Could you comment on how Crypten currently uses a trusted party (as shown in the slides) to facilitate the computation? #AskResponsible_VanDerMaaten
@spartazhihu @dataeconomyai The party who receives the reward secret shares that reward, and the parties jointly update their model in order to complete the online learning loop. [3/3]
@spartazhihu @dataeconomyai The parties use an epsilon-greedy policy to select the arm, which is a policy that can be shown is differentially private. This means that when the arm of the bandit is pulled, the amount of information that is leaked about the private contexts is very small. [2/3]
@spartazhihu @dataeconomyai The contextual bandit I describe in the talk is actually fully implemented in MPC. Multiple parties secret share their contexts and together evaluate the model to decide what arm to pull. [1/3]
@HaoChenMSR @dataeconomyai We rely on a trusted party to provide Beaver triples for private multiplication. We are in the process of integrating a protocol that generates Beaver triples using the Paillier cryptosystem without requiring a trusted party. That approach is quite a bit slower though.
Excited about the promise and challenges with deploying privacy-preserving technology, a joint talk with Subodh Iyengar @__subodh
Session-D: Finally for talks on Secure Computing & Privacy-Preserving Technologies join @PMohassel of @facebook to talk Privacy Preserving Technology in Practice followed by David Kolhbrenner discussing the Keystone TEE Framework. youtu.be/LNKVB72seLw
@jiahengzhang96 @dataeconomyai @PMohassel An important aspect of what kind of PPT to apply is how it matches the requirements of the application. For example an app that runs in the background can run a more complicated algorithm than if it runs in the foreground. Can it use existing databases? does it need more RTTs?
Looking forward to #ResponsibleData. Salil Vadhan will be introducing, OpenDP a new community effort to build a trustworthy, open-source suite of tools for deploying differential privacy. Questions? Ask him here. #AskResponsible_Vadhan
