"He was genuinely shocked at the low number of students coming from the north." @emer_currie1 tells @MarkCarruthers7 that @SimonHarrisTD made the remarks following his experience as Minister for Further and Higher Education...
@bbctheview @emer_currie1 @MarkCarruthers7 @SimonHarrisTD Maybe there's nowhere to live?
@bbctheview @MarkCarruthers7 @emer_currie1 @SimonHarrisTD And what did Simon do about it? I have a child looking at studying a course in DCU which isn’t available in NI but the grades are 2A* A, equivalent in GB 3C. The points in IRE are skewed against NI students. Simon could have sorted that but didn’t.
@bbctheview @emer_currie1 @MarkCarruthers7 @SimonHarrisTD …maybe he’d like to address the issues with this in IE university admission criteria?
@bbctheview @emer_currie1 @MarkCarruthers7 @SimonHarrisTD Reason for low Nos is the different ed systems. Lvg cert in Rep, A levels in NI. Most students in NI do 3 A levels. CAO values these less so it's harder for students from NI to get into good courses in RoI. QUB & UU are stuffed with RoI students as this pt also works in reverse.
@bbctheview @emer_currie1 @MarkCarruthers7 @SimonHarrisTD maybe you could run the same test for the belfast grammar school students to see if anyone is aware of anything beyond sandyknowes and moira roundabouts in NI ?
